We are all, even the best of us, egotists and self-deceivers, and without a little comfortable make-believe to clothe us we should freeze in the outer winds.
Richard Hannay in The Three Hostages

This reminds me of the Emperor’s new clothes. While usually the Emperor and the mob are seen as the ridiculous ones in the end, the fact is, he had them going just because he acted like he was wearing clothes. As long as you act like you’re something, people begin to think you are. And if the alternative is simply going about naked, then who’s to condemn “a little comfortable make-believe”?
